What Is Paint Ghosting?

The buildup of soot, dirt, and dust on walls and ceilings is called ghosting. Ghosting is also called soot staining or thermal tracking, terms that hint at the cause of ghosting.

Ghosting stains on ceiling areas can appear when there's a gap in insulation around rafters. When cold air meets the warmer ceiling, condensation occurs and attracts household particles. Ghosting also commonly happens when warm air sources affect air flow like behind or above lamps, vents, or even clothes dryer vents.

If there's excess moisture, ghosting can cause paint bubbling, chipping, or flaking. Often, ghosting can be a hint that something is amiss in your home. Faulty insulation, an HVAC system that needs maintenance, or high humidity may be in need of attention or repair. Ignoring ghosting can lead to increased discoloration or staining, and more damage over time.

What Causes Ghosting on Your Walls & Ceiling?

Most commonly, ghosting is caused by excess humidity, static electricity, or

a break in the thermal gap. Ghosting can appear in any room or ceiling of a home, although most commonly you'll see ghosting stains in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

  • Excess Humidity: Poor air ventilation can cause humidity buildup and moisture condensation. Normally, air escapes through vents, chimneys, and open windows. However, when a house is always closed up, ventilation can be minimized, allowing for humidity levels to rise.

    • Airborne particles will stick to moisture and condensation, resulting in a ghosting effect that is commonly seen in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

    • Ghosting can also be caused from accumulated moisture and soot when cooking, using a wood stove without proper venting, burning candles, incense, and cigar or cigarette smoking.

  • Static Electricity:  When moving air develops an electrostatic charge, the positive and negative charges attract particles that are floating through your home. Soot, dirt, dust, and smoke will clump together to the point where you can see them. The result of this accumulation is called ghosting.

  • A Break in the Thermal Gap: Well-built homes are constructed with an air, moisture, and thermal barrier that allows for efficient cooling and heating. This three-way protection system can be compromised by insufficient insulation and/or gaps in insulation.

You'll want to identify the root cause in order to choose the best cleaning, mitigation, and prevention methods. How to Remove Ghosting on Ceilings & Walls

Once you've addressed the cause of ghosting to ensure it won't happen again, you'll want to remove the accumulated dirt, debris, and soot. You can purchase wall cleaning solutions at your local home improvement store or if you prefer, you can make your own solution. Before you start:

  • Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the wall or ceiling to make sure there won't be any damage to the paint or texture.

  • Use proper ventilation during the cleaning process. The fumes from commercial and homemade cleaning solutions can be toxic so be sure to use a mask, open windows, and use a fan.

  • Remember – removing ghosting marks is a different process than removing paint streaks.

How to Remove Ghosting on Ceilings and Walls with a Homemade Cleaning Solution

  1. Mix 1 part bleach with 3 parts of water.

  2. Use rubber gloves, a mask, and eye protection as you sponge on the mixture.

  3. Allow the solution to work for about 5 minutes before wiping the area with clear water.

  4. Rinse thoroughly so the beach solution is completely removed.

  5. Allow the wall or ceiling to dry thoroughly before repainting.

Preventative Measures to Avoid Future Ghosting

Ghosting can be unsightly so once you identify the cause, you'll want to take preventative measures to avoid future problems. These measures will go a long way in keeping your home well-maintained:

  • Inspect your attic insulation for any air leaks, air movement, or cold spots.

  • Keep HVAC filters clean and changed as per manufacturer's instructions.

  • Make sure all exhaust and extractor vents and fans are in good working order.

  • Inspect kitchen range hoods, shower vents, and clothes dryer vents.

  • Keep your home's humidity range within 40% – 50%.

  • Use paints with stain resistant qualities and choose finishes that are easy to clean.

  • If you're wondering whether expensive paint is worth it, be assured that you get what you pay for when it comes to paint.

  • Professional painters can guide you on the best paints to use and are experts at advising on paint finishes specific to each room in your home.
